{"id":117,"date":"2020-11-15T17:48:16","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T17:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mandmade.co.uk\/?page_id=117"},"modified":"2020-11-15T17:48:16","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T17:48:16","slug":"illustration-or-fine-art-degree","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/mandmade.co.uk\/?page_id=117","title":{"rendered":"Illustration or Fine Art Degree?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Progression to Stage 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This autumn has been a time of reflection, do I pursue a degree in <strong>Fine Art<\/strong> or a degree in <strong>Illustration<\/strong>.\u00a0 Illustration, it\u2019s more my way of working. I enjoy the challenge of fitting text within a context. I\u2019m also more into illustration than I realised &#8230; get ready for a major brain-fart and please skip this if it\u2019s to long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One illustrator who has been foremost in my mind is <strong>Tom Hovey <\/strong>(\u201cFood illustrator to the stars\u201d) &nbsp;\u2013 who I only recently discovered studied at AUB!&nbsp; (\u2018Great British Bake Off\u2019 is back for new tv series this autumn). &nbsp;I\u2019ve always admired the beautifully rendered, mouth-watering images he has created throughout each series. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomhovey.co.uk\/the-great-british-bake-off\">http:\/\/www.tomhovey.co.uk\/the-great-british-bake-off<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jackie Morris<\/strong> &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackiemorris.co.uk\/\">https:\/\/www.jackiemorris.co.uk\/<\/a> Stunning, ethereal watercolour images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Simon Bartram &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonbartram.com\/\">http:\/\/www.simonbartram.com\/<\/a> <\/strong>Detailed, stylised and colourful illustrations in childrens books \u2018Bob, The Man on the Moon\u2019, and \u2018Deep Sea Dougal\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A couple of editorial photomontage-style illustrator\u2019s whose work I admire: <strong>Michelle Thompson<\/strong>, who creates quirky , often mid century vintage-inspired collages for The Guardian, The Economist&nbsp; and many other editorial publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cold War Steve<\/strong> (aka Christopher Spencer) creates satirical photomontages inspired by the government, current affairs, and more recently the Covid-19 pandemic. He created a double-sided giant wind break in his cheeky photomontage style installed at Boscombe Pier this summer as part of the Arts By the Sea festival. &nbsp;It showed some tongue-in-cheek images of local characters and places, &nbsp;its \u201cdark\u201d side was covered up by BCP as they considered it to be negative. It\u2019s part of his \u201cCold War Steve Meets the Outside World\u201d exhibition. &nbsp;(Irritatingly I missed it and I had to make do with seeing his work online). &nbsp;He\u2019s also become known as the \u2018Brexit Bruegel\u2019 and a \u2018modern-day Hogarth\u2019. Can\u2019t wait to see what he comes up with next!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-dorset-54292574\">https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-dorset-54292574<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-cold-war-steve wp-block-embed-cold-war-steve\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ENdQlJktpz\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coldwarsteve.com\/\">Home 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Home 2024&#8221; &#8212; Cold War Steve\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coldwarsteve.com\/embed\/#?secret=Jj2LqzzqBD#?secret=ENdQlJktpz\" data-secret=\"ENdQlJktpz\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Martin O\u2019Neill<\/strong> &nbsp;uses rich, colourful patterns, found images and photographs in collage which give a slightly \u2018vintage\u2019 feel to his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cutitout.co.uk\">https:\/\/www.cutitout.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Aubrey Beardsley <\/strong>is probably one the very first adult illustrators that I noticed. I love art nouveau, &nbsp;and his detailed, curvilinear black and white illustrations were often shocking, beautiful and sometimes grotesque \u2013 &nbsp;favourites are \u2018The Peacock Skirt\u2019, and his illustrations for Oscar Wilde\u2019s play Salom\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No reference to <strong>Art Nouveau<\/strong> is complete without me mentioning <strong>Alphonse Mucha<\/strong> &#8211; his poster advertising Sarah Bernhardt in \u2018Gismonda\u2019, \u2018The Seasons\u2019 &#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Edward Ardizzone \u2013 <\/strong>his war illustrations (IWM), book illustrations include \u2018Stig of The Dump\u2019, \u2018A Child\u2019s Christmas in Wales\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eric Ravilious <\/strong>I also discovered his work at the Imperial War Museum last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/eric-ravilious-1817\"><strong>https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/eric-ravilious-1817<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not leaving out some iconic music album covers by artists such as <strong>Peter Blake \u2013 Sergeant Pepper<\/strong> , <strong>Gerald Scarfe \u2013 Pink Floyd The Wall<\/strong>, &nbsp;and top of my list is <strong>Patrick Nagel<\/strong>, his iconic, sexy illustration of Rio for Duran Duran. Nagel\u2019s body of work \u201cWoman\u201d was striking and unique. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Nagel#Nagel_Woman\"><strong>https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Nagel#Nagel_Woman<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illustrationx.com\/artists\/ColinElgie\"><strong>https:\/\/www.illustrationx.com\/artists\/ColinElgie<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; iconic, retro, vintage style of 30s and 40s posters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>London Transport Museum<\/strong> collection of vintage posters , London Transport\u2019s map <strong>by Harry Beck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ltmuseum.co.uk\/collections\">https:\/\/www.ltmuseum.co.uk\/collections<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/aestheticapparatus.com\/\"><strong>http:\/\/aestheticapparatus.com\/<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp; a design , printmaking and illustration studio. Love the styles in this portfolio of work. Not sure if it\u2019s a collective or an individual?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kristjana S Williams<\/strong> has a unique collage-style too using colourful and intricate layers of decoupaged flora and fauna. I first saw her work several years ago when she started selling stylised maps in a local art gallery in Westbourne. &nbsp;(I love maps! )<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristjanaswilliams.com\">https:\/\/www.kristjanaswilliams.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lauren Child <\/strong>(\u2018Lola and Charlie\u2019 and \u2018Ruby Redfort\u2019 books)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chris Riddel <\/strong>(\u2018Ottoline\u2019, collaborations with authors such as Paul Stewart and Neil Gaiman, and his satirical political cartoons.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Maps Illustrators <\/strong>(did I mention I love maps?!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>House of Cally&nbsp; <\/strong>\u2018The Illustrated Map of &nbsp;London\u2019.&nbsp; Fun, hand-drawn maps showing famous landmarks and personalities of&nbsp; London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-house-of-cally wp-block-embed-house-of-cally\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"lJChNF6bvf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/houseofcally.com\/about-house-of-cally\/\">About<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;About&#8221; &#8212; House of Cally\" src=\"https:\/\/houseofcally.com\/about-house-of-cally\/embed\/#?secret=JknZRpYt8O#?secret=lJChNF6bvf\" data-secret=\"lJChNF6bvf\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Julia Gash<\/strong> &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/juliagash.co.uk\/\">https:\/\/juliagash.co.uk\/<\/a> Quirky, bright modern maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh \u2013 and one more illustrator I must add is <strong>Andy Warhol<\/strong> : check out his early work illustrations of shoes and butterflies.
