During October Reading Week, I visited Southampton City Gallery. Such a beautiful building in its own right, a perfect example of 1930s municipal architecture.
(It was heavily bombed during WW2. The whole front of the building was ripped off, tragically killing 35 people, including 15 children who were attending the School of Art. Pieces in the collection there include Anthony Gormley’s ‘Untitled Diver’ and Rodin’s ‘Eve’, Edward Burne-Jones’s ‘Perseus’ series and some really bold modern and contemporary artworks. I really liked the dumpster bin filled with an arrangement of neon lights and strings of Christmas lights, and a neon-lit cement mixer.
