Morag Myerscough was a guest speaker on an AUB webinar this week. She’s recently had her exhibition “Belonging” at the AUB Gallery.
“Morag has always been fascinated by how colour, pattern and words can change urban environments and people’s perceptions of spaces into places”
She’s primarily a colour-loving installation artist who has always struggled to belong. Her colour-saturated, personal, cheerful, and bold, exhibition is about Belonging. It was really interesting hearing her speak about her early years as a student at Central St Martins, and because she didn’t live in halls of residence (coming from Holloway), she felt she didn’t really fit in and couldn’t connect with the other students. Her autobiographic exhibition features amongst others, family photos of her at a similar stage in her life to her French grandmother. She likes to take fragments of her old and new work, and often her inspirations follow through her body of work, a continual “work in progress.” She likes to work from “a continuity of ideas”. Much of Morag’s work is community-based installation projects, involving the local community and creating places from spaces to give people a sense of identity and belonging. – Oh, and her preferred supplier of choice is Brewers, and she likes Dulux Weathershield paint (they sponsor her). She mixes her own colours, and is probably using the same shades as she used from her Central St Martin’s days. Who doesn’t like Dulux paint? She uses Bristol paints for her neon colours. Colour ALWAYS cheers me up – Go Morag! *cheesy thumbs-up!*
